WiSE STEM Extravaganza

OEH graduate students participated in the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) STEM Extravaganza! More than 50 fourth-sixth grade students participated. Students came from 22 schools in five eastern Iowa counties.

2018 WiSE 1

We facilitated the science breakout session. Students were able to rotate to three different stations: Ergonomics (Maya), Aerosols (Alyson & Shaunae), and Noise (Kate & Jessica). We brought equipment related to each station, and gave the students the opportunity to learn more about the awesome things one can do in Occupational and Environmental Health! We hope this inspired the next generation of girls to pursue STEM, especially fields related to Occupational and Environmental Health!

3rd Annual Occupational Health & Safety Student Research Conference

The 3rd Annual Occupational Health and Safety Student Research Conference was held Friday, April 6. OEH graduate and postdoctoral students presented posters and presentations addressing their occupational health and safety research.

Dr. Robert Harrison from the University of California-San Francisco discussed the increasing burden of occupational injury and illness on vulnerable workers, providing some insights into new ways to examine the burden of injury and illness on low-wage workers within Iowa.

ASH Alumnus, Rich Gassman, gave a brief presentation on his role as Director of Human Resources at Riley Resources Group, and answered student questions on how to transition from school to the workplace.

Also, congratulations to Maya Ramaswamy and Danielle Medgyesi for receiving the Zwerling-Sprince Scholarship in Occupational and Environmental Health.
