Guidance and Grub 2017
Students, faculty, family, and friends gathered for a BBQ at Kent Park on Labor Day in Sept 2017. We had plenty of good food and a great view of (temporarily drained) Kent Lake!

Homecoming 2017

Fall Social 2017
I3HSA spent Halloween weekend eating pizza, drinking cider, playing games (Cards Against Humanity and Mario Kart), and decorating pumpkins!

Site Visits 2017
The Safety Director and Industrial Hygienist gave a great presentation about occupational health and safety at John Deere. The presentation was followed by a guided tour of the facility. We were able to see the production of the unfinished engine blocks, heads and crankshafts.

State Hygienic Laboratory
First year Industrial Hygiene students toured the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa. We learned about analytical methods used to evaluate occupational, environmental, and biological samples. Students were able to meet with laboratory management and scientists.

Leadership in Occupational Health and Safety with Dr. Jim Withers
Special thanks to Dr. Jim Withers, Corporate HSE Director of American Packaging Corporation, Inc. for discussing the importance of leadership in occupational health and safety with I3HSA and the Heartland Center.

2018 OEH Jeopardy
2018 OEH Jeopardy was held on February 20th! Second year IH students organized this year's event.

OEH students were quizzed on a variety of topics including current events, Iowa City/Coralville, occupational and environmental hazards, and even faculty research.

Congratulations to the "A-Team"! This year's victorious OEH Jeopardy team was Jeff, Shelby, Matt, and Tuo.

WiSE STEM Extravaganza
OEH graduate students participated in the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) STEM Extravaganza! More than 50 fourth-sixth grade students participated. Students came from 22 schools in five eastern Iowa counties.

We facilitated the science breakout session. Students were able to rotate to three different stations: Ergonomics (Maya), Aerosols (Alyson & Shaunae), and Noise (Kate & Jessica). We brought equipment related to each station, and gave the students the opportunity to learn more about the awesome things one can do in Occupational and Environmental Health! We hope this inspired the next generation of girls to pursue STEM, especially fields related to Occupational and Environmental Health!

3rd Annual Occupational Health & Safety Student Research Conference
The 3rd Annual Occupational Health and Safety Student Research Conference was held Friday, April 6. OEH graduate and postdoctoral students presented posters and presentations addressing their occupational health and safety research.
Dr. Robert Harrison from the University of California-San Francisco discussed the increasing burden of occupational injury and illness on vulnerable workers, providing some insights into new ways to examine the burden of injury and illness on low-wage workers within Iowa.
ASH Alumnus, Rich Gassman, gave a brief presentation on his role as Director of Human Resources at Riley Resources Group, and answered student questions on how to transition from school to the workplace.
Also, congratulations to Maya Ramaswamy and Danielle Medgyesi for receiving the Zwerling-Sprince Scholarship in Occupational and Environmental Health.

Congratulations to all of our 2018 program graduates!

AIHce 2018
In May of 2018, students attended AIHce in Philadelpia, PA. Thirteen industrial hygiene students attended the conference, presenting nine posters.
Summer 2018: WiSE Health Sciences Research and Lab Experience Camp
OEH graduate students participate in activities to promote careers that protect worker health at the Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) Health Sciences Research and Lab Experience Camp. Twenty students attended who are upcoming 7th-9th graders. They learned about Industrial Hygiene and Injury Prevention through hands-on activities.

Local news coverage of this event can be found at:

Students learn about aerosol characterization though number and mass concentrations.

Students evaluate the effect of distractions on reaction time.

Hearing protection is evaluated using the 3M EARFit system.

We appreciate all of our volunteers and the time they spent to promote women in STEM fields.
